THE rehabilitation of Wanezi Dam, which was swept away by Cyclone Dineo in 2017, has restored a critical water source for institutions and irrigation farmers in Insiza District.
Dam Committee chairperson Mr Arrow Moyo said the breach left the community vulnerable for years.
“When the dam wall was washed away, it was a great disadvantage,” he said.
“We watched water running away and did not know how we would feed our children. We are grateful to UNDP and the Government for restoring it.”
Agritex agricultural business advisor for Wanezi Irrigation Scheme Mrs Caroline Moyo, said the restored dam now supports several villages and institutions.
“The dam now serves Wanezi village, Wanezi High School, Wanezi Clinic, Shamba Primary School and other surrounding villages,” he said.
“The irrigation scheme covers 30 irrigable hectares. Last season, we planted 30 hectares of beans and harvested three tonnes due to low rainfall.
“We are 67 farmers, and we have already secured maize seed for 20 hectares this season. We are planting early, medium and late maturity varieties to improve yields in this low-rainfall area.”
Beneficiaries said the project has restored water security and improved livelihoods.
