MINISTER of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Ambassador Dr Frederick Shava has called for stronger collaboration among Government, academia, industry and development partners to reimagine Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education as a driver of sustainable development.
Speaking at the 6th Blended Annual Education for Sustainable Development Interdisciplinary Research Conference at the National University of Science and Technology on Wednesday, Dr Shava said fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships was critical in equipping learners with the skills and innovative mindset needed to address emerging global challenges.
The conference is being held under the theme “Reimagining STEM Education for a Sustainable Future: Fostering Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration.”
Dr Shava said Zimbabwe’s education system must continue evolving to produce graduates capable of developing practical solutions to national and global challenges, including climate change, food security, industrialisation and digital transformation.
“STEM education is central to building a sustainable future. Achieving this vision requires meaningful collaboration between Government, institutions of higher learning, industry, researchers, communities and our international partners,” he said.
He said interdisciplinary research and innovation should be strengthened to ensure universities become hubs for technological advancement and economic development.
Dr Shava commended NUST for providing a platform that brings together researchers, policymakers, educators and industry leaders to exchange ideas and develop solutions that support sustainable development.
He said the Second Republic remained committed to promoting innovation-driven education in line with Vision 2030, adding that institutions of higher learning had a pivotal role in producing graduates with relevant skills for the modern economy.
