President Mnangagwa has urged the nation to rekindle the spirit of sacrifice demonstrated by yesteryear heroes and said the current generation should work hard to modernise, industrialise, and develop the country.
Speaking at the 45th Heroes Day commemorations at the National Heroes Acre today, President Mnangagwa stated that the quest for economic freedom and emancipation should now be realised by current and future generations.
“Through our zeal, hard work, and unity, we will build our country,” he said.
“We must boldly decide now and not stop until we reach middle-income country status.”
The President also presented national flags to the families of Cde Benjamin Burombo, Brigadier-General (Rtd) Lameck Francisco Mutanda, Cde John Mbedzi, and Cde Jairos Jiri, who were posthumously declared National Heroes.
He also conferred awards on three distinguished individuals, including Professor Vladimir Gennadyevich Shubin, a long-time ally during the liberation struggle and former Soviet official, who will receive the Zimbabwe International Friendship Award.
In addition, President Mnangagwa presented teenager Inasem Chitutu from Bindura with the Silver Cross of Zimbabwe for rescuing two children from a burning house.
President Mnangagwa also presented Dr Madeline Nyamwanza Makonese, the nation’s first female African medical doctor, with the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award for Service in Human Capital Development for her pioneering contributions to health and education.
