Beijing — Chinese relatives of MH370 passengers walked out of a meeting with Malaysia Airlines yesterday, complaining that no government official was present.
The group of about 30 marched out saying that a single airline official plus translator were inadequate to properly address their issues over the handling of the flight’s disappearance and the ongoing investigation.
The group had asked for a Malaysian government official to attend, “but nobody showed up,” said Wen Wancheng, whose son was on the flight.
“We want test results to be announced by a government official not a corporate representative,” he said.
Several relatives have expressed distress and demanded more thorough information since debris from a Boeing 777, the model used by the flight, washed up on the French island of Reunion last week.
The Chinese relatives, backed by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, have requested that Malaysia explain comments by its Prime Minister Najib Razak that the wreckage was “conclusively” found to be from the missing aircraft.
After leaving the meeting yesterday morning the group started to walk to the Malaysian embassy, around 4 kilometres away, to seek out a government official.
“I don’t think going to the embassy can actually solve the problem,” Wen told dpa, “But maybe the media can help amplify our demand and draw larger attention.”
Relatives would not attend any more MH370 meetings unless a Malaysia government official or members of the media are present, the group told dpa via WeChat social media.
Malaysia Airlines called yesterday’s meeting after about a dozen relatives demonstrated outside its Beijing ticket office on Thursday, saying Malaysia was hastily concluding that the plane went down at sea in order to close the matter. — News24.
