Release the Cuban Five — Gwati

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González — were captured by the US in 2001 and are serving four life sentences and 75 years collectively in a US prison for espionage.
Speaking at a function in Harare, the chairman of Zimbabwe Committee for the Liberation of the Cuban Five, Cde Lovemore Gwati, said the five were wrongly accused by the US.
He said they were in fact fighting against terrorists wanting to topple the Cuban government.
“Because the US government through the CIA has played the principal role in funding, training and arming the ultra-right Miami mafia, the FBI targeted the five Cubans instead of arresting the terrorists,” said Mr Gwati.
“This is the only reason that the five Cubans are in prison. They were framed up in a political witch hunt and rail-roaded by the US in a seven month trial in Miami, where it was impossible for them to have an impartial and fair trial.”
Cde Gwati condemned the economic blockade on Cuba by the United States government.
“The Cuban people have been targets of US policy, including a 50-year economic blockade designed to punish a whole people who have chosen a different road for building their society,” he said.  
The launch was attended by several people including personnel from the Cuban doctors working in the country and Zimbabweans who studied in Cuba.
Zimbabwe and Cuba share cordial relations that have seen the two countries cooperating in various fields, particularly in education and health.
