Eight boreholes have been drilled in Mbare, Harare, and fitted with solar pumps under the Presidential borehole drilling scheme with more to come as the contractor is still on site.
While municipalities and town councils are supposed to provide piped water to their residents, failure to do so has seen President Mnangagwa extending the drilling of State boreholes, set up to ensure every village had a borehole, to urban areas as an emergency measure with Harare Metropolitan expected to get around 200.
The residents of Mbare have thanked the president after the commissioning of one of the boreholes by Prevail International Group.
Ms Faustina Marumbi from Shawasha Flats said she was happy to have a borehole drilled near her place and ensured President Mnangagwa of a flawless victory.
“We have been living in Mbare for decades but council has failed to provide us with safe and clean water and as you know this area is a hotspot for disease outbreaks. We are happy that the President is making endless efforts to make sure that we are safe through the provision of clean and safe water,” she said.
Mrs Filda Makoni echoed the same sentiment and said she was happy for the provision of water as Mbare was a hotspot for diseases.
“We are happy that our humble President is drilling boreholes for us and that the Prevail International Group is making sure that it sticks to the President’s mandate of providing clean water to us. We will vote for our President and we are sure that he will win the elections,” she said.
Zanu PF secretary for information and publicity Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa said President Mnangagwa was prepared to improve the lives of every Zimbabwean citizen for the better.
President Mnangagwa’s vision is to do more than this. These boreholes are just an emergency to make sure that everyone receives clean and safe water. When the President wins things are going to be better for everyone,” he said.
Prevail International Group chairperson Mr Paul Tungwarara said easier access to the water would ensure that diseases like cholera are minimised reiterating that access to clean water was free for all.
“We have drilled about 8 boreholes under the Presidential borehole drilling scheme and all of them are solar powered.
“We are not stopping with the programme and we want the whole of Mbare to receive water and avoid disease outbreaks in the area.
“It is clear that the CCC-led council has failed and that is why we have come up with this borehole drilling scheme.
“We are so happy that His Excellency the President have given people safe and clean for free.
“This water is not for sale and it is for everyone,” he said.
Harare and Chitungwiza are expected to get over 200 boreholes installed under the presidential borehole drilling scheme as Government is walking the talk in ensuring that urban areas have equitable access to clean water.
