On Wednesday, Hervé Renard was sacked from his Ligue 1 gig for a poor streak.
The two-time Afcon winner was let go by Lille on Wednesday. A club statement read: “After 13 matches of Ligue 1, LOSC advanced to the 16th in the standings; a perilous position and certainly not up to the club’s goals.
“Absolutely convinced of this talent within the squad, [chairman] Michel Seydoux quickly made a decision that will aim to review the management of the playing squad to rebuild a positive dynamic and put the project of Lille back on the road to success. The short term goal is to achieve a rapid impact on the play and results of the team.”
But he knows in Africa, his stock is high.
Winning the Nations’ Cup with Zambia in 2012 was followed by another with Cote d’Ivoire earlier this year. So, who in Africa will go for the man who really knows the turf in these parts?
Maybe, his sacking has come at an opportune time, since major African nations are partaking in World Cup and Afcon qualifiers in the coming year.
Algeria? It’s not clear, but the links have been made. The highest ranked team in Africa is an attractive proposition, with their budding talents, consistently good tournament experiences and swashbuckling style.
Nigeria? At the moment, the rumours around a sack for Sunday Oliseh have been quietened, but one can be sure the 47-year-old Frenchman will be keeping an ear out.
And with his penchant for leading underachievers to big things — Zambia to their first African Cup of Nations title in 2012 before guiding perennial underachievers Côte d’Ivoire to their first continental crown in 23 years earlier this year — Renard is not exactly in need of a CV.
And this is Africa, where even the most obscure European names have been given high profile jobs. Give it six months, Renard will find something juicy in Africa — if he wants. — supersport.com
