Renowned Brahman pedigree breeder buried in Bulawayo

RENONWED Brahman pedigree breeder the late Jeffrey Sommer, who passed away at Mater Dei Hospital on Sunday, has been laid to rest.

Sommer was laid to rest at the Athlone Cemetery on Tuesday.

He was 70.

Sommer was a key figure in the later history and development of the Brahman breed in Zimbabwe in 1979.

He was a former president of the Brahman Breeders’ Society of Zimbabwe.

Current president Mr Dirk Odendal described the Sommer as a breeder who invaluable expertise benefited both established and emerging Brahman pedigree breeders.

‘I first met Jeffery in 1980 when he was instrumental in the further development of the Brahman pedigree breed a year before. In 1990 he took over the Peter Grant Holdings farms and continued working for the development of the Brahman Breed. At its peak the Peter Grant Holdings had a herd of over 23 000 cattle and were regarded as one of the top breeders in the counntry” said Mr Odendal.
