POLICE have called on members of the public to report police officers involved in criminal activities and acts of misconduct as the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) moves to clean up its ranks.
Speaking at the official opening of Nketa 9 suburb Police Base on Saturday, Officer Commanding Nkulumane District Chief Superintendent Marshall Dube said members of the public should police the cops.
“Please take note that most of our police officers are still young and they may make mistakes during the course of their duties. I humbly appeal to you not to condemn them. They are your children who need guidance and wisdom. In the event of them engaging in criminal activities do not hesitate to contact the Officer in Charge who will take corrective measures,” he said.
Chief Supt Dube said members of the public were free to report to the officer commanding the district or his seniors if they are not happy with the response from the Officer in Charge.
He also implored the media to expose police officers engaging in criminal activities so that the force is rid of such officers.
Chief Supt Dube said senior officers depend on criticism from the media to strengthen the organisation’s operations.
“We also rely on your reports on issues that may be of concern to members of the public. Let us all unite in fighting crime,” said Chief Supt Dube.
He said the construction of the police base was meant to bring services closer to the people.
Construction of Nketa 9 Police Base Station started in 2016 through the assistance of residents from Nketa 9 and Nketa 7.
In June a Zimbabwean businessman based in South Africa Mr Timothy Mncube funded the electrification of the building and erection of a perimeter fence.
On Saturday Mr Mncube donated 10 bicycles for use by the police during their patrols.
He said the donation was a way of giving back to the community in which he grew up. — @nqotshili
