GOVERNMENT has confirmed its commitment to enhance the agricultural sector through increased funding for research and development initiatives.

The pledge was made at the Second Research for Agricultural Excellence and Technology Indaba, held at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show (ZAS) yesterday.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka read a speech on behalf of Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga at the event, emphasising the crucial role of research in fostering sustainable agricultural practices.

VP Chiwenga highlighted the necessity of integrating research findings into practical applications.

“Farmers are the backbone of our economy, and their success hinges on our ability to provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge they need to thrive,” he said.

He underscored that the Indaba serves as a vital platform for economic diversification and rural empowerment, promoting the application of research results relevant to a connected agricultural ecosystem.

Dr Chiwenga reflected on the achievements of last year’s inaugural Indaba, which set a foundation for innovation, collaboration, and research in agriculture.  He pointed out that this year’s theme, “Integrating Knowledge: Ethical Research Considerations in Developing a Connected Agricultural Ecosystem,” underscored the importance of bridging the gap between research and practical application.

“The goal remains clear: to strengthen the position of agriculture as the backbone of the economy, ensuring food security and creating employment,” VP Chiwenga said.

Emphasising ethical considerations, Dr Chiwenga said as they strive for agricultural excellence there is a need to ensure that  research practices align with ethical standards, promoting equitable and sustainable access to technology.

He stressed that it is not just a regulatory requirement but a moral obligation to protect vulnerable communities during research activities.

Furthermore, he pointed out the far-reaching implications of agricultural practices on the environment, advocating for accountability and sustainability in innovations.

Dr Chiwenga announced that the ongoing amendment of the Research Act aims to bring predictable funding and enhance the coordinating role of the Research Council of Zimbabwe. He expressed the government’s unwavering commitment to expedite the construction of the Research Council’s office.

“This project symbolises the Government’s dedication to fostering an environment that nurtures budding researchers.”He also mentioned that Zimbabwe will host the prestigious Global Research Council sub-Saharan Africa Regional Meeting in November 2025, an opportunity for researchers to connect with their global counterparts.

Praising farmers for their remarkable achievement of surpassing 300 million kilograms of tobacco sold during the 2025 marketing season, he highlighted this as a testament to a well-connected agricultural ecosystem driven by research.

Research Council of Zimbabwe executive director Dr Partson Chikudza , also spoke at the Indaba, emphasising the event’s focus on technology and collaboration.

He noted that the participation of various research institutions and schools showcased the importance of integrating agricultural education with practical applications.

“We drew participants from universities and colleges, and primary and secondary schools were given the opportunity to showcase their products, particularly in animal feed and new goat breeds for artificial insemination,” he said.

The leaders emphasised the critical need for continued investment in agricultural research and the integration of sustainable practices, ensuring that farmers receive the support necessary for success.

The Indaba not only serves as a platform for collaboration but also reinforces the Government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture as a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economy.
