Research key economic enabler

The complexity and unpredictability of challenges facing world economies today need a research and innovation sub-sector that is not only ready to diffuse threats but one that is also proactive to avoid downturns and maximise on growth, Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.
He was speaking at the Inaugural Research Indaba held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) this afternoon.
VP Chiwenga talked up the critical importance of collaboration between Government, the private sector and academia.
The indaba, themed “Research for Sustainable Industrialisation and Economic Development”, focused on the need for collective efforts to translate research into actionable solutions that can drive economic recovery.
VP Chiwenga emphasised that the partnership among these sectors is essential for leveraging research in ways that directly benefit society.
“In a world grappling with unprecedented challenges-from climate change to economic inequality-research emerges as the cornerstone for developing solutions to confront these issues head-on,” he said.
“Researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and communities must collectively ensure that the results of research are implemented to benefit society.
“As we convene, we reflect on how research and innovation can serve as catalysts for Zimbabwe’s journey towards sustainable industrialisation and robust economic development.
“Our path to economic stabilisation and recovery is neither straightforward nor singular.”
He pointed to the transformative impact of research in agriculture, citing advancements like climate-smart technologies that have yielded improvements in productivity.
VP Chiwenga called for similar innovative approaches across industries such as mining, manufacturing and ICT to enhance overall economic resilience.
The Vice President reiterated that bridging the gap between knowledge generation and practical application is vital for driving sustainable industrialisation.
