Preparations for the 12th Zimbabwe International Research Symposium scheduled for next week in Harare are now at an advanced stage, the Research Council of Zimbabwe has said.
The symposium, taking place from Wednesday to Friday, is aimed at showcasing the latest scientific research results, networking and creating smart partnerships.
It will run under the theme: “The Nexus between Research, Industry and Development: Key for Innovation and Sustainable Development.”
Addressing a press conference in Harare yesterday, the council’s executive director, Mrs Susan Mutize, said the symposium would have plenary presentations that would cover the contribution of energy to industrialisation, innovations in information communication technology and commercialisation of research and, intellectual property, among others.
“Over 100 research papers will be presented during the symposium under the following national research priority areas; social sciences and humanities, sustainable environmental and resource management, promoting and maintaining good health, and national security,” she said.
She said they were expecting international speakers from countries such as United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore and Botswana among others.
Mrs Mutize said the guest speaker was Mr Aamir Butt, the chief executive of Lancor Scientific Ltd based in United Kingdom.
Mr Butt pioneered translational research on early diagnosis and screening of cancer through Lancor Scientific.
Mrs Mutize said the benefits of attending the symposium was that delegates would meet face to face with experts from various disciplines and identify new areas of cooperation.
“The symposium is also a platform for identifying gaps and challenges faced by sectors in the development of targeted and evidence-based strategies. Young researchers may get career guidance.
“Authors benefit from publication of their papers in the renowned Zimbabwe International Research Symposium Book of papers that have been presented, referred and edited to international standards. The primary objectives of the symposium is to popularise research and development to provide a platform for the dissemination and documentation of that research.”
She said young scientists from primary and secondary schools would also have an opportunity to display their research skills. She said outstanding young scientists, students, individuals, companies and teams who were excelling in research would be acknowledged and given awards.
Mrs Mutize said this year’s theme was motivated by the policy direction of President Mnangagwa on strengthening linkages between academia and industry for economic growth.
