RESIDENTS of Mabvuku and Tafara on Sunday took Harare City Council and councillors to task over their failure to provide services. The residents said councillors needed to deliver in line with the promises they made in their election manifestos.
Speaking at a pre-budget consultative meeting, the residents expressed concern with the poor state of roads, erratic water supply, poor street lighting and mounting garbage that was exposing them to diseases.
They demanded speed humps on roads closer to schools to deter speeding motorists who were putting the lives of school children in danger. City principal communications officer Mr Michael Chideme said council would act on the grievances raised by the residents.
“We were consulting them on our achievements and failures. What we are looking at in our budget is to roll over the 2015 uncompleted programmes and projects,” he said.
He said council intended to acquire refuse trucks soon.
“We also intend to continue with the construction of holding bays for the Eastern and Southern areas of the city. We intend to be very strong in the areas of social services, that is the provision of play grounds, halls, kitchen soups, sewing and cooking clubs,” Mr Chideme said.
He said it was the intention of council to construct new market stalls and home industries for informal traders.
