COMMUNITY members in Unit O, Chitungwiza, have expressed concern over poor service delivery by Chitungwiza Municipality, accusing the local authority of allowing sewage to flow into the water system at Tasimukira Primary School.

For more than three months, sewage and effluent have reportedly been accumulating near the school’s borehole, raising fears of possible contamination and a public health crisis.

Residents fear a repeat of the 2008 cholera outbreak, which severely affected the area, and say children could be exposed to waterborne diseases if the situation is not addressed urgently.

Parents also claim that some pupils are suffering from diarrhoea and have called on the municipality to urgently resolve the problem before it escalates into a serious health emergency.

The concerns come as Chitungwiza Municipality recently faced a High Court order over the illegal discharge of sewage into the environment.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) welcomed the development, saying the order was issued on September 30 this year under case number HCH3235/25, following its application for a mandatory interdict against the local authority.

The order prohibits Chitungwiza Municipality from unlawfully discharging raw or untreated sewage and effluent into any water source, water body or the environment, in violation of the Environmental Management Act (Chapter 20:27).
