Journalists attending the two-day training programme convened by the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and the Palestine International Cooperation Agency (PICA) were yesterday challenged to use the skills they gained during the workshop especially in the forthcoming harmonised elections.
The workshop began on Tuesday with trainers providing technical capacity building to local journalists as the nation seeks to foster professionalism and responsible reporting ahead of the polls.
Zimbabwe Newspapers Group’s Editorial Executive, William Chikoto thanked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services for organising the workshop and challenged the journalists to fully use the skills they gained at the end of the workshop.
“This programme came at the right time with just a couple of months before the elections. You will understand the whole world will be looking at Zimbabwe and the media.
“We appreciate the Second Republic’s engagement and re-engagement efforts and they will be looking at the media and the two days we have got are good for us so that we cover the elections in a professional manner. Let’s fully use the skills we have learnt especially on digital media and broadcasting,” he said.
He added that while the training largely focused on print journalism, at Zimpapers, the largest integrated media house in the country, journalists were required to contribute to all platforms be it print or electronic.
“At Zimpapers, we really don’t have people that we call broadcast journalists, all our journalists have to report for newspapers, for online, for radio and for television so the skills that they have received are quite useful going forward,” he said.
The delegation from PICA which arrived in the country on Sunday on a 10-day visit will also carry out another workshop for electronic journalism.
