THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League mid-season transfer window closed last week without much customary drama and frenzy that often accompany the period.
There were no dramatic deadline-day deals, surprise departures or headline-grabbing moves.
But just when it seemed all transfer business had been concluded, Hardrock delivered a stunning statement of intent.
The ambitious Premiership newcomers secured the signature of highly-rated Highlanders midfielder Mongameli Tshuma, beating several rivals, including CAPS United, in the race for one of Zimbabwean football’s most coveted young talents.
Highlanders announced this week that they had reached an agreement with Hardrock for the permanent transfer of the 24-year-old midfielder, with the deal taking effect on January 1, 2027.
The move brings an end to months of speculation surrounding Tshuma’s future and underlines Hardrock’s growing ambitions as they continue to make waves in their debut top-flight campaign.
While figures of around US$200 000 have been widely speculated, Hardrock chairman Wellington Mpandare dismissed claims that money was the decisive factor in the deal.
Instead, he credited strong relationships and successful negotiations with the player’s representatives.
“It wasn’t about money or all those figures that have been talked about,” Mpandare told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
“It is all about good relations. We have been tracking Mongameli’s progress for some time and we entered into negotiations with his management team. The talks went on very well and we are happy we have managed to land his signature. He will be joining us in January 2027. So, it was all about having good relations,” said Mpandare.
Blessed with pace, close control, excellent dribbling and an intelligent football brain, Tshuma has established himself as one of the league’s most exciting attacking players.
MWOS coach Lloyd Mutasa previously likened his talent to that of Zimbabwean football legend Peter Ndlovu, while his Bosso mentor Benjani Mwaruwari recently described him as a “gem”.
Under Mwaruwari’s guidance, Tshuma has flourished, operating effectively on the wings and in advanced attacking roles behind the strikers.
“In terms of talent and ability, no doubt about that, Mongameli is a very good player even though he still has to develop a little bit,” said Mwaruwari.
“He’s not scoring enough, but he’s creating enough.
“Sometimes, it takes time. A Mongameli type; it’s difficult to get. He can play in any team, as long as he can fit.
“Mongameli needs people who can read him quicker. He’s a very, very talented young man,” said Mwaruwari.
Tshuma had emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the domestic game following a series of impressive performances in Highlanders colours this season.
His form had attracted interest from several Premiership clubs, while there was also speculation that foreign suitors could enter the race.
However, Hardrock ultimately won the battle for his signature.
In a statement, Highlanders confirmed the transfer agreement and indicated that the player would remain at the club until the end of the current campaign.
“Highlanders Football Club confirms that an agreement has been reached for the permanent transfer of midfielder Mongameli Tshuma to Hardrock Football Club, with effect from 1 January 2027,” said the club in a statement.
Hardrock are still to make an official comment on the transfer.
“Tshuma will remain with Highlanders FC for the remainder of the current football season before officially joining Hardrock FC at the beginning of the 2027 football season.
“Mongameli remains committed and professional in his approach as the club continues to fight to achieve its targets in all the football competitions during this current football season.”
Apart from giants CAPS United, fellow newcomers FC Hunters were also reported to have shown interest in the midfielder at various stages. However, it is Hardrock who have emerged as the clear winners in the race.
The signing comes at a time when the Kwekwe-based side are enjoying a remarkable first season in the Premiership.
Although Hardrock remain within touching distance of the championship, Mpandare insists the club’s primary objective remains a top-four finish.
The newcomers sit second on the table with 51 points, just two behind leaders Scottland, although they have played one match more. With eight games remaining, Hardrock are firmly in contention for the title.
“For us our target has always been the top four and if we win the league, it will be a bonus,” Mpandare said.
“We are a new kid on the block and we can’t expect to just come in and win the league title. Of course, Scottland did it. But if we also win it, it’s a bonus. Like I said, our target from the start of the league was a top four finish,” said Mpandare.
