ASCOT Stadium will host a high-stakes relegation battle on Sunday, as bottom-placed Kwekwe United welcome a revitalised Dynamos side determined to keep their survival hopes alive.
With just nine points to their name, Kwekwe United face a daunting challenge: overcoming a Dynamos outfit that has found new life under a refreshed technical team, bolstered by recent signings, energised by a financial boost, and riding high on strong performances against top-flight contenders.
Adding a compelling twist to the fixture, United’s technical bench features two former Dynamos stalwarts — head coach Masimba Dinyero and assistant Gift Muzadzi — both of whom once proudly donned the famous blue jersey. Their insider knowledge could prove pivotal in this crucial clash.
Despite his team’s struggles, Dinyero remains upbeat.
“My young boys are not intimidated by Dynamos’ current form or their supporters. Yes, they have been motivated by the incentives injected into the team, but I cannot compare them with previous Dynamos sides that played truly great football,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of the match, likening it to a final.
“We will treat this match as a final before a final. I am optimistic that we will pick up our first three points since I joined Kwekwe United. We still have a chance to survive relegation, but it starts with maximum points against Dynamos.”
Acknowledging the stature of their opponents, Dinyero described Dynamos as “the most successful club in the country” and expects their travelling fans to fill Ascot Stadium.
However, he believes that neutral supporters from other clubs will rally behind United to balance the atmosphere.
“The morale at Dynamos is different to ours. They have the 12th man in their supporters, who make life easier for their players.
But my young guys are not concerned. They have a die-hard fighting spirit. Don’t be surprised if the situation turns in our favour. We only need to work hard to conquer.
I know their fans are coming in numbers, but we bank on other teams’ fans to rally behind us for a balanced game in the stands.”
Dinyero said that playing against Dynamos always brings out the best in his players.
“Our players always play their hearts out for the team, and every player raises his game against Dynamos. This game is self-motivating. I will psych them and work on their physical and mental strength.
