GRAHAMSTOWN. — Foreign students studying at Rhodes University in Grahamstown were being moved to residences on campus yesterday as a precautionary measure, International Programmes, Projects and Events Officer Allan Magubane confirmed. More than 1 000 students from other countries are registered with the university, with the bulk living in campus residences. Concerns have, however, been raised over the safety of students living off campus after fears of xenophobic attacks surfaced, with the looting of foreign-owned shops in Grahamstown East earlier yesterday.
“We had some issues in the townships, but there is no need to panic yet. But we felt it would be best to move the foreign students living there, out of potential harm’s way,” Magubane said. “We have already started moving students over and have received a lot of help and assistance from fellow students.”
Rhodes students have joined their peers from universities countrywide in strongly voicing their opposition to rising tuition fees. A meeting was scheduled for later yesterday evening, where students were expected to get feedback from managements on their list of demands. The university earlier this week agreed to scrap the 50 percent minimum payment required at the beginning of the academic year. — News24.
