Two men drowned while performing some rituals at Clydesdale Dam in Gweru, with one of them yet to be identified.
The tragic incident occurred on February 24, 2025, when 15 people reportedly went to the dam.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the cases.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms two cases of sudden death in which two men drowned at Clydesdale Dam, Gweru, on 24 February 2025,” said Inspector Mahoko.
“It is alleged that on the fateful day, 15 people — 10 women and five men — went to the dam to conduct traditional rituals. During the ritual processes, the two men drowned in the dam.”
Police officers, including members of the Sub Aqua Unit, attended the scene following a report of the incident.
The bodies were later retrieved the following day.
One of the deceased was positively identified as Philemon Matavire (46) of Woodlands, Gweru, while the other body is yet to be identified.
Inspector Mahoko said investigations into the incident are in progress.
“Once again, we remind members of the public not to take risks by venturing into deep water bodies or flooded rivers and dams,” he said.
