A KOMBI driver who went rogue, driving recklessly and beating up a police officer, has been thrown behind bars for 30 months.
Malvern Last Chiutsi (23) caused chaos on 4 September when he sped through a red light at the busy intersection of Leopold Takawira Street and Jason Moyo avenue in Harare. He cut across traffic, putting passengers and other road users in danger.
Police on duty tried to stop him, and a sergeant jumped into the Nissan NV350 to arrest him. Instead of stopping, Chiutsi floored the accelerator with the cop still inside.
The dramatic chase ended in Avondale where Chiutsi stopped briefly, punched the officer in the face, and — with the help of his conductor — shoved him out of the moving vehicle before speeding off again.
The injured officer was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.
Chiutsi was later arrested and faced three charges.
For reckless driving, he was slapped with a 24-month jail term and had his Class 2 licence cancelled.
For assaulting a police officer, he got 12 months, with six months suspended for five years.
For failing to comply with a police instruction, he was fined US$100 or two months in jail.
