THE Road to Harare for the month-end National Association of Secondary School Heads Track and Field Finals reaches the penultimate stage today and tomorrow when Matabeleland North Schools clash at Somvubu Secondary School in Bubi.

One of the organisers of the event Gamuledu Ncube, the headmaster of Gloag High School confirmed that the inter-district finals will be held at Somvubu and that all the districts will have representation at the event.

“The season comes to an end in the province with the staging of our provincial finals. It has been a long journey with pupils starting with inter-house competitions, preparations for the district championships, now it’s the ultimate one. Winners at this event will go to the national finals in Harare at the end of the month.

“It promises to be an explosive and entertaining competition across age-groups in both track and field. We are confident that we will come up with the best of what the province has to offer,” said Ncube.
He said it’s all systems go for the event as organisers want to protect their image.

“When you are hosting, you are chasing gold on two fronts. You want to be a very good host and also chase gold on the track and field, we are surely going to give visiting teams a good run for their money. We have moved every stone possible to ensure we host a good event,” said Ncube.

The organisers have come up with an action packed programme in which the 100m sprints will be the first events across the three age-groups, Under-16, 18 and 20.

They will be followed by the 10 000m boys’ final before the hurdles.
The 4x100m will bring the curtains down tomorrow and soon after the event, the team to represent Matabeleland North in Harare will be selected.

The province alongside Bulawayo have been the worst performers in these championships and both will be hoping for a change of fortunes.

What is, however, encouraging is that it is the region that gave Zimbabwe Magaret Mahohoma, Sibusiso Nyoni, Busisiwe Nyoni, Zephaniah Ncube, Nokuthula Munkuli, Simangele Ncube, Temba Ncube, Phathisa Ngwabi, Thethelani Moyo, Vuyani Fulunga, Adon Treva and Charles Mafika, confirming it has the potential to be among the best.

Harare, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central have been the most dominant forces while Masvingo, Matabeleland South and Manicaland maintained the position of mid table teams.
