ROBBERS allegedly pounced at Mawabeni Secondary School in Matabeleland South and stole computers and stationery after attacking and tying a security guard to a tree.

School authorities woke up on Tuesday to the robbery and found the brutalised security guard tied to a tree.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.

Insp Ndebele could, however, not give more information on the matter saying police were still gathering facts on the ground.

“I don’t have the details about the incident. But we have received reports to that effect. Our officer is still on the ground investigating the matter. So I cannot say much at the moment,” he said.

The Chronicle could not immediately establish the value of the stolen items.

Sources who declined to be named said the robbers raided the school which was manned by a female security guard.

“The robbers savagely attacked her, tied her to a tree and ransacked the school. They stole computers and stationery. The security guard was found in the morning in bad shape,” said the source.

Matabeleland South Provincial Education Director Mrs Tumisang Thabela said she had not yet received a report on the matter.

In recent months, robbers have been targeting schools and in some cases they have made away with cash. Police have previously urged schools, businesses and churches not to keep cash at their premises, but deposit it in banks to avoid possible losses to thieves.
