FOUR armed robbers struck a shop in the Harare central business district (CBD) yesterday morning, vanishing with US$500 000 in cash and property in an incident that left nearby shop owners in shock.
The robbery is believed to have been masterminded by an insider, raising concerns among local business owners about security measures.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms an armed robbery case involving US$500 000 in Harare central business district this morning. Investigations have since started,” said Comm Nyathi.
Witnesses said the robbers struck quickly, catching their target off guard.
One nearby shop owner criticised the victim for not banking money, highlighting a common concern among businesspeople.
“We, as businesspeople, are to blame for attracting these armed robbers. How can one keep such large volumes of money in a shop where employees receive a few dollars for their salaries?” they remarked.
In a separate incident, the Harare provincial police reported an armed robbery case involving US$13 000 at the home of a company director in Mt Pleasant. Three armed robbers terrorised the family, demanding car keys and cash.
“The robbers approached the complainant covering their faces with masks, armed with a pistol and other weapons. They ordered him to lie down while threatening his family,” said Insp Chakanza.
The robbers tied the complainant’s hands with a shoelace and demanded money, taking 2 000 rand from a wardrobe.
These incidents have raised alarm among local businesses about safety and security measures, prompting calls for increased vigilance and better protection against armed robbery threats.
