A 21-YEAR-OLD MAN from Pumula East suburb was handed a 15 year prison term for sodomising his 13 year old partially blind roommate.
Nkosinathi Gumbo stood before Western Commonage regional magistrate Pasipanodya Maturure where he admitted to the vile act and pleaded for mercy. He claimed “it just happened” and told the court he only realised afterward that he had done “something bad.” His plea fell flat and he was slapped with an effective 15 years behind bars.
Prosecutor Christina Manyika told the court that both Gumbo and the juvenile complainant are partially blind and shared a room in Pumula East. The offence occurred on 9 October.
Around 9PM, the 13 year old retired to bed, climbed into his blankets and drifted off to sleep. But at about 10.45PM, Gumbo slipped into the same room and headed straight for the boy’s bed instead of his own.
The court heard that he quietly slid under the juvenile’s blankets, removed the child’s shorts and sodomised him.
The terrified boy later confided in his teacher at school who immediately took action. A police report was filed, leading to the arrest of Gumbo. The child was referred to hospital for medical examination.
