SAN FRANCISCO. — Wayne Rooney will be restored to a central striking role at Manchester United this season with Louis van Gaal, the manager, accepting that he diminishes the England captain’s goalscoring talents by deploying him in midfield.
Van Gaal has also told fans there could be a “surprise” striker signing before the close of the transfer window. United have been left short of options up front after deciding not to make Radamel Falcao’s loan permanent and selling Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce.
Van Gaal is now set to use Wayne Rooney as his main forward next season and have Javier Hernandez and James Wilson as back-up.
While LVG insists he is happy with that trio, he did rule out the possibility of more business to come this summer.
Edinson Cavani, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski are among United’s striker options should Van Gaal decide he does need a new man.
He said: “We also have Hernandez, Wilson and maybe a surprise, you never know. It is a process.” —The Telegraph
