The Rotary Club of Chitungwiza is supporting the health and well-being of people living with albinism in the local community and at a recent event, it donated sunscreen lotion to those in need.

Newly-appointed president of the Rotary Club Chitungwiza Mr Allen Kadye emphasised the club’s commitment to serving the community and assisting those in need.

“The move is in an effort to promote the health of people living with albinism so that they won’t face any difficulties in maintaining their skin.

“If people living with albinism are exposed to the sun, their skin is easily affected and sometimes it can lead to cancer,” he  said.

He said there were community-based initiatives where they researched different challenges being faced in the community. The donation of sunscreen lotions to those who had little natural skin protection was a crucial step in addressing the unique health challenges faced by those living with albinism.

Tawanda Chikanya, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his gratitude for the initiative.

“I am hoping that this will not end here but they will go a step further in assisting people like us who are now battling with neck cancer, said Mr Chikanya.

Another beneficiary, Rosemary Matarutse, also expressed her appreciation for the Rotary Club’s efforts, but noted that more support was needed.

“I am grateful because of these initiatives. Our skin needs protection from the sun. However, we also need help especially with sun hats and spectacles,” she  said.

Mr Kadye assured the community that the club had more programmes and initiatives planned to support them including the distribution of books to schools across the country.

“We are promising more programmes to people around Chitungwiza in general,” he said.
