SIX local golf courses benefited from $50 000 green keeping equipment from Royal and Ancient (R&A), which was handed over after the end of green keepers workshop at Royal Harare yesterday.

The equipment, donated to the Zimbabwe Golf Association, was handed over to Falcon and Country Club in Harare, Masvingo Golf Club, Chinhoyi, as well as Harry Allen and Hillside both in Bulawayo.

R&A director of golf course management Steve Isaac said they were happy to partner Zimbabwe in this noble cause.

“The distribution programme begun in 2004 and has so far benefited a lot of clubs mainly in Africa.

“To date Zimbabwe has received the largest consignment and we hope this will go a long way in developing golf.

“When we begun the programme we had a seminar in East Africa, that is in Kenya, and it was successful and so we decided to extend it to other coun- tries.

“We had a good turnout during the workshop with some people travelling from Zambia and Malawi, which was encouraging.”

The R&A was formed in 2004 and is based in St Andrews in Scotland.

They organise British Open, golf’s oldest and most prestigious international major championship, along with a number of other amateur and junior events.

ZGA president Mafingei Nyamwanza said he was excited that R&A had chosen Zimbabwe as the venue for the workshop.
