ROYAL Harare will host the inaugural Mashonaland Majors Junior Championship with several top players under the age of 21 expected to tee off.
The tournament, a World Amateur Golf Ranking sanctioned event, is exclusively for juniors and will be played over 64 holes, with 36 today and 18 tomorrow.
Some of the players expected to take part include leading women golfer Miriam Masiya.
Zimbabwe Golf Association administrator Tirivashe Nheweyembwa confirmed the tournament, saying they are looking forward to a competitive tournament.
“We are happy to be hosting the inaugural Mashonaland Majors Junior Championship at Royal Harare starting (tomorrow) today. We are expecting several juniors from across the country to be part of the field.
‘The tournament is of so much significance as it carries World Amateur Golf Rankings,” said Nheweyambwa.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent’ has gone for more than a month leading the Asian Tour Order of Merit after his last month’s win at the International Series Morocco.
The golf star managed to take first place in July and his win in over three years leapfrogged his to number one having started the campaign on position 18.
He also leapt into second on The International Series Rankings, from 45th, confirming what everyone knew already: that the Zimbabwean is back to his best.
The week before Morocco he had finished third in the Japan Players Championship and in May he was fourth in the Kolon Korea Open – one of four top-12 finishes on the Asian Tour this season, prior to Morocco.
The 33-yar-old Vincent, from Harare, who is now based in the United States, took part in eight tournaments in the ASIAN Tour making the cut three times and missing out on five occasions.
His win at the International Series Morocco propelled him to number one on the order of merit after accumulating 1, 040 points despite missing the cut at the 125th US Open he is still in control of the standings.
For his efforts he is now second in the International Series Rankings behind Australian Lucas Herbet having taken part in four tournaments with 196.04 points.
