Rugby league action returns

ACTION returns to the Lion Lager National Rugby League tomorrow with explosive games on the cards. The league is coming from a five-week break and the clubs are eager for action after recharging their batteries.  Bulawayo based Western Panthers make the trip to the capital to face Old Hararians while Matabeleland Warriors travel to Zvishavane to face Gweru Sports Club.

Former champions Old Miltonians are at home at Hartsfield and welcome Old Georgians in a game they are hard pressed to win.

Old Miltonians recorded their first win of the season when they beat equally struggling Zvishavane Bulls and hope to continue from where they left.
Coach Theo Weale was relieved after his team beat the asbestos miners but a stern test awaits them tomorrow against a compact Old Georgians team.

Weale has said statistics however favour Old Georgians who are yet to lose a game this season and trying to contain them will be difficulty.

‘‘Old Georgians are a good side and statistics favour them if you consider that out of the five games we have played we managed just one win against Zvishavane Bulls. Old Georgians are yet to lose a game and this makes them a formidable team in the league. But we will however not be just fulfilling a fixture against them but play to salvage something. The five-week break gave us enough time to work on a number of things and the results in training have been tremendous,’’ said Weale.

Old Miltonians have roped in Zivanai Dzinomurumbi and Victor Olonga to their technical team to revive the fading rugby giants who seem to be on a free fall.

‘‘Yes, Zivanai and Victor are now helping the team and this development has given me the chance to concentrate on playing while these two concentrate on coaching. The two have brought a lot of changes and injected life into the team. Now we have a proper working structure and we are looking to at least get something out the Old Georgians game,’’ he said.

Matabeleland Warriors will be hoping to come out with a positive result at McAdam against Gweru Sports Club but they have not been convincing enough this season.

Zvishavane Bulls although at home have no chance against Harare Sports Club and only a miracle can save the asbestos miners from the jaws of defeat.

Life has been difficulty for Zvishavane Bulls and the sooner they put their act together the better as relegation certainly hovers around their necks.
