RUNDE and Vungu Rural District Councils have embarked on massive housing projects targeting development of a combined 3 450 stands.

Vungu is developing 450 stands in Insukamini, which is earmarked to transform the growth point to a town status by 2018 while Runde in Zvishavane is developing 3 000 stands in Siboza area, about 10 kilometres from Zvishavane town.

Runde chief executive officer Mr Gorden Moyo said council would finance the servicing through the setting up of a service station at the business centre.

“We’re embarking on a serious and massive land development project so as to deliver on affordable housing needs to our people in the community.

We are running a project at Siboza where we have a layout plan which will carry 3 000 stands across all the densities.

“To fund such an exercise we are embarking on income generating projects like the setting up of a service station at Siboza, which will cost us about $150 000,” said Mr Moyo.

He could not be drawn into coming out with the total cost of the project saying the RDC is yet to come up with a final figure.

Vungu chief executive officer Mr Alex Magura said servicing of 450 housing stands at Insukamini Growth Point will start after the rainy season.

“We’re trying to attract more investment so that we can have a settlement which we can call a town,” he said.

“We’re going to have more stands, which we will develop and service after the rainy season in our quest to have reasonable settlement.”

Housing development is a critical component of the Government’s development blueprint, Zim-Asset, which targets to develop 150 000 housing units per year from 2013 up to 2018.
