Rusape General Hospital has been named the best hospital in Manicaland Province providing top notch maternal, newborn and child health care services. Makoni (Rugoyi) Rural Hospital was adjudged the second best, while Mt Melleray in Nyanga came third.

This was confirmed by Manicaland Provincial Medical Director Dr Patron Mafaune, who implored health personnel and institutions to provide quality care to maternal patients. Speaking at a function to honour Rusape General Hospital last Friday, Dr Mafaune said the Ministry of Health and Child Care had put in place mechanisms and systems in medical institutions to ensure that quality was maintained.

“The death of mothers, babies and children in Zimbabwe have remained unacceptably high over the past 20 years, though there has been some significant reduction noted since 2014,” she said. “Most of our pregnant women seek care at our health institutions, for example 76 percent of our women attended all the required four or more antenatal care visits and 72 percent deliver in our health institutions, an increase from 66 percent in 2010.”
