POLICE in Rusape arrested a 19-year-old man from Chikunguru Village, Chief Makoni, in connection with a series of stock theft that rocked the community between August and October this year.
The suspect, identified as Clive Samuvi was apprehended following reports from four households that collectively lost five herd of cattle during the period.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the arrest and identified the complainants as Fredrick Nyaruwanga (65), Godfrey Chinovaita (73), Luisa Urayai (61) and Mandeya Nyaradzayi (52).
A breakthrough came on October 21, when police officers received a tip-off from villagers that an ox was tied near Samuvi’s homestead.
Upon visiting the scene accompanied by the complainants, it was discovered that the ox matched the description of one of the missing cattle.
Although Samuvi was not home at the time, villagers pointed an accusing at him as the prime suspect. A raid was subsequently launched, leading to his arrest at his aunt’s homestead around 2am the following morning.
Further investigations led to the recovery of stolen bovines, which the suspect had allegedly sold to unsuspecting buyers.
However, one of the stolen cattle had already been slaughtered, reportedly for a family function.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said investigations were still ongoing and urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious livestock dealings to the police.
