Mudewaire village in Rusape was recently plunged into mourning following the death of 69-year-old village head Lukas Mudewaire in a suspected poisoning incident.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said officers attended the scene after receiving a report from the deceased’s 76-year-old brother.
The late Mudewaire lived alone at his homestead and was last seen alive by his brother shortly before his death.
On August 4, 2026, the brother visited him and noticed that the bedroom door was open.
After knocking and getting no response, he entered the house and found Mudewaire lying lifeless on the floor.
The room was filled by a strong smell of suspected poison.
“Police attended the scene and inspected the body, finding no visible injuries. However, an empty 500ml container was recovered from the room,” said Asst Insp Chinyoka. The body was subsequently taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death as police investigations continue. — Manicaland Bureau
