economic ties between the two countries.
The Russian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Andrey Kushakov, said this when he paid a courtesy call on Vice President John Nkomo yesterday.
“As you know this was my first visit to VP Nkomo and in our discussion we covered matters pertaining to the bilateral relations between the two countries.
“We have agreed that the excellent political relations should be strengthened by strong economic ties. There is interest from Russian State owned companies to increase their presence in Zimbabwe.
“They are looking at the energy sector and infrastructure development and we are expecting them to visit Harare and discuss issues in the near future,” he said.
Ambassador Kushakov reiterated that his country was opposed to the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
“We also discussed international issues and that our government wishes the Zimbabwe Government the best in the implementation of the GPA.
“We also discussed the sanctions as part of the GPA and confirmed our position that all the economic sanctions should be removed,” he said.
On Thursday Mr Kushakov met Acting President Joice Mujuru and called for the immediate removal of the illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe. Russia has supported Zimbabwe at various international meetings and in 2008 together with China and other progressive nations vetoed a UN motion moved by Britain and its Western allies to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe. The country also supported Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle from the racist Rhodesian regime led by Ian Smith.
