The Republic of Russia will standby Zimbabwe in its fight against illegal sanctions that some Western countries imposed on the country in 2001.
Delivering his country’s solidarity message during the Zanu PF Annual People’s Conference in Gweru, Russian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Nikolai Vladimirovich Krasilnikov said despite the sanctions imposed by the West and neo-colonial practices, the relations between Zimbabwe and Russia represent an example of equal, open and mutual respect.
“Russia will work hand in hand with Zimbabwe to fight illegal sanctions so that the two countries have peace, unity and sustainable development,” he said.
The United States and its Western allies slapped Zimbabwe with sanctions in 2001 as punishment for embarking on agrarian reforms to correct a colonial legacy.
Krasilnikov said he was convinced that the conference will become an important milestone in the activities of Zanu PF as it traverses the journey to develop the country and uplift the living standards of the citizens.
“I am convinced that the outcomes of the conference will add to the solid foundation for the future development of Zimbabwe,” he said.
He said Russian President Vladmir Putin, although not a member of any political party, was fully aware of the solidarity message on the occasion of the conference, which was coming soon after Zanu PF’s impressive and solid victory in the August 23 and 24 harmonised elections. — New Ziana
