As Russia celebrated Victory Day today, marking the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II, citizens across the country were filled with a mixture of pride and sorrow as they honoured their ancestors’ sacrifices and reflected on the enduring legacy of the war.

For Julia Stepuro, a journalist with First News For Child TV in Moscow, the day was deeply personal.

Her grandfather, a Red Army soldier, died in combat and did not witness victory.

“It is the most important holiday in Russia,” she said.

“It gives us time to reflect on who we are as a people and the sacrifices made by our fathers, grandparents, and great-grandparents—not just to free Russia, but the whole world. My grandfather never got to celebrate Victory Day, so when I do, I celebrate it on his behalf,” she told The Herald.

Veronika Avakova, a university student, shared similar sentiments, recalling the stories of her great-grandfather, Senior Lieutenant Domitry Grigorievich Lesovog, who survived the war.

“He died some years back, but he was a proud military officer who often spoke about the war when I was little,” she said.

“Victory Day will always mean so much to all Russians because it reminds us of their courage.”

For 18-year-old Sofia Cheruousova, the day is both a national and family occasion.

“It’s not just a holiday, it’s an important family day,” she said.

“We cook a special meal together, attend remembrance concerts, and watch fireworks. There are musical galas, film screenings, and art performances across Moscow. Everyone in Russia respects this day.”
