SEASONED BMX cyclists Joe Ruwoko and Miyanda Maseti were crowned the 2025 African BMX elite champions at Mount Pleasant Cycling Club on Sunday.

The two riders were part of 70 athletes who took to the track in the prestigious competition which Zimbabwe hosted for the second time in two years.

Ruwoko was ahead of Malone Kaduku and Tawanda Marowa who took second and third places respectively as pre-tournament favourites Hellen Mitchell was second ahead of Kudakwashe Mswaka in the women category.

Zimbabwe hosted a total of five countries –  Egypt, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Sudan and Central Africa Republic.

The low turnout in the elite under-23 race saw Gylord Kaduku winning as Rufaro Tembo and Melisa Pikani were first and second in the women’s elite-under-23 race.

Cycling Zimbabwe secretary-general Elsie Mahumbe said the event went on well and had support of the corporate world and the parents.

“We successfully staged the tournament and it went on really well. We are grateful to the support we got from all the countries that came on board.

“Usually, BMX riders are youth athletes who travel with their families, so it gives Zimbabwe the exposure in terms of sports tourism,” said Mahumbe.
