The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has approved more than 5 000 local and international observers to monitor the upcoming general elections later this month, the electoral body announced yesterday.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo, speaking in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital, told reporters that the country is ready to conduct the 2024 national and provincial elections on May 29.
Mamabolo said that training for 202 500 voting officials, who will manage the electoral process in the voting stations, is nearing completion.
“The Commission is pleased to share that a record 160 organisations, with 5 000 observers domestically and from around the world, will be observing South Africa’s 2024 general elections. About 15 of these observer organisations are international and include the African Union, the Carter Centre Democracy Programme, and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance,” Mamabolo said.
Meanwhile, 76 580 voters abroad will cast their votes on May 17 and 18 at the country’s 111 foreign missions, he added. — Xinhua
