TOP South African referee Victor Gomes has been assigned to officiate the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) encounter between Congo Brazzaville and Zimbabwe in Brazzaville tomorrow.
Gomes will be assisted by fellow South Africans Zakhele Siwela and Johannes Moshidi while Thando Ndzandzeka will be the fourth official.
A Premier Soccer League (PSL) referee since 2008, Gomes was voted PSL Referee of the Season in 2012/13 and 2017/18 seasons and has been an international referee since 2011.
A no-nonsense referee in the South African league, Gomes was in 2018 hailed by the international football community after he rejected and reported an attempted bribe of over R300 000. He had been approached and offered the money to fix a Caf Confederation Cup match between Nigerian side Plateau United and Algerian side USM Alger.
Football fanatics will get to watch the match live on SuperSport 9 from 1615hrs as the Warriors look to set the early pace in their qualification campaign. Zimbabwe top Group G with three points on goal difference following a 3-0 win over Liberia in their opening qualifier.
The group also comprises the Democratic Republic of Congo who sit second after beating Congo Brazzaville 3-1 in their opening fixture of the campaign. — @khumzallen
