Meanwhile, exports to Germany dropped from about US$18 billion in 2008 to about US$15 billion last year, the minister reported.
He said his department is also looking at boosting trade relations with other countries including those in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
One of these Asian countries is Indonesia, Davies said, adding that he had forged a good relationship with his Indonesian counterpart.
“Global economic power is shifting before our very eyes from the North and West to the South and East,” the minister said.
As South Africa has seen a rapid growth in trade with emerging countries, led by China and India, its exports to Europe and other developed countries remain below their 2008 peaks, according to Davies.
The European Union remains South Africa’s biggest trade partner, but troubles on the continent have left volumes depressed, he noted.
“Nowhere in Europe have we got back to where we were in 2008,” Davies said. — Xinhua.
