SOUTH African Airways will increase flight frequency on the Johannesburg-Harare route from 10 to 12 flights, in response to rising demand from travellers between the two cities, SAA country manager, Ms Julia Rewayi, announced yesterday.
The increased flights will begin on November 5.
“This strategic move is in response to the growing demand from travellers between the two bustling cities. With the new schedule, SAA will offer two additional flights from Harare to Johannesburg, enhancing connectivity for passengers,” she said.
Flight SA25 will depart Harare at 7:20am from Monday to Friday arriving in Johannesburg at 9am.
A second flight, number SA23, will depart Harare at 12:25pm, arriving in Johannesburg at 2:05pm on a daily basis while flight SA24 is set to depart Johannesburg at 10am daily to Harare arriving at 11:35am.
Another flight will depart Johannesburg at 8:10pm, arriving in Harare at 9:45pm every Sunday to Thursday.
Ms Rewayi added that SAA has been a dominant player on the Johannesburg-Harare route for over two decades, consistently providing reliable service to both business and leisure travellers.
“Increasing our flight frequency on the Johannesburg-Harare route is a testament to our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our customers.
“The demand is driven by the growing ties between South Africa and Zimbabwe, and we are excited to facilitate this connectivity, which is crucial for business and tourism,” added Ms Rewayi.
The increase in flights aligns with SAA’s densification strategy, aimed at bolstering operations in Africa, an area identified as pivotal for the airline’s growth.
“The rising demand for flights is attributed to several factors, including the movement of Zimbabwean expatriates, a surge in tourism and heightened trade relations between South Africa and Zimbabwe,” said Ms Rewayi. The increase in flights between Harare and Johannesburg by SAA follows the introduction of flights on the Harare-Entebbe route by Uganda Airlines following the growth in air transport demand between the two countries.
It is expected that frequent flights between the two destinations will stimulate bilateral trade between Zimbabwe and Uganda, with the airline also targeting the Entebbe-Lusaka-Bulawayo and Entebbe-Lusaka-Victoria Falls routes.
