THE Sables Karting Club’s 2024 season ended with glitz and glamour during their prize-giving function which was spiced up by an AutoX race at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare on Sunday.
The club is a community-driven organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting karting as a sport for enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Karting provides a massive personal morale booster for the kids’ confidence they never knew they had.
And on Sunday, the Sables Karting Club held their final event of the season, including their annual prize-giving function. The fastest karters in each age category won a trophy, cash prize, and some candy, much like in championships in any motorsport.
In particular, in the Senior/Masters Class, first place went to Rob Weston and second place to Daniel Krogg.
These two have been battling on the track all season long with Weston having the edge in the end. In the Junior Class, first place went to Adrian Beddies-Zekas, second place to Maleehah Parsell, and third place to Oden Joseph.
Adrian has dominated first place throughout the year, showing fans how it is done with his smooth and consistent driving. Maleehah was hot in his heels trying to keep up with this young champion.
In the Kadet Class, first place went to Ebenezer Parsell and second place to Gabriel Beddies Zekas. Ebenezer, just seven years old, is fearless and shows great potential.
Gabriel, who started karting this year, pushed his way through the year improving with each race.
The kids have had a great season with fierce yet fair competition.
“What we want to teach them is not how to win, but how to accept defeat gracefully, and back in the seat and try again, while always respecting fellow drivers.
“We are proud to say that our AutoX friends made this final karting event of the year a huge success as they turned up in their numbers to battle it out, “said Bronwyn Parsell, the Chairlady of the Sables Karting Club.
What is AutoX? Well, imagine a battered old car, sometimes without windows, lights, or a back seat, going on a part dirt track part tar as fast as possible . . . this too is done with normal racing or street cars with the drivers all trying to better each other’s lap times. Around noon the racing began on a small portion of Donnybrook’s main circuit track and the adjacent dirt roads.
Two youngsters, a junior and a senior, all on bikes, and a variety of cars, entered the race fighting it out for the best times.
