Sables win Victoria tri-nations tourney

tournament – thanks to Uganda’s 32-18 defeat of Kenya at the Kyadondo Rugby Ground in Kampala, Uganda.
The tournament was introduced last year and Kenya were the inagural winners, but this year the unbeaten Sables put a spirited performnace that saw them win the cup with one more game to play.

The Sables have won all their games in the campaign for glory having beaten Uganda home and away and defeated Kenya at Harare Sports Club a month ago and Kenya’s campaign to defend the title was still on course.

Kenya had also beaten Uganda at the Kenya Rugby Ground in Nairobi and a win against Uganda on Saturday could have enhanced their chances of bringing the final to the wire. But Uganda picked themselves up to cause an upset and register their only win in this year’s edition of the Victoria Cup.

This means the result in Nairobi for the Sables on Saturday would not have any effect on the final outcome for the Brandon Dawson-coached side.
But the Sables – who went into camp yesterday for the Kenya match – will be taking the game seriously as there are international rankings at stake and a win will also see the Sables set a new winning record.

The record was set in 1987 when they won four consecutive games and a win against Uganda last month saw them equal that record.
“The task is bigger now because Kenya will come out guns blazing wanting to prove a point and we are not going to sit and relax as the 2011 Victoria Cup champions.

“We are not resting because we are the champs and as we start camp today (yesterday) we are going to put everything into it and we have to come back with a win from Nairobi and improve on our third target, the World Rankings.

“It is still game on for us as we are looking at finishing on a high note and improving on our rankings.
“The boys are raring to go and bring a result from Nairobi,” said Sables manager Noddy Kanyangarara.
