Ex-employees of Twitter, rebranded as X, have received compensation from the company over a year after their sudden dismissal.
These workers, formerly working at the Africa office located in Accra, Ghana, had contemplated legal action against X due to the company’s failure to provide them with redundancy payments.
The workforce faced layoffs in November 2022, just after Elon Musk acquired the company for US$44 billion. Elon Musk, who said he was losing more than $4m a day, embarked on a massive global cull of employees, sacking more than 6 000 people.
Last April, Mr Musk said X had 1 500 employees, down from the just under 8 000 who were employed at the time he bought the company.
Agency Seven Seven, the legal representation firm for the employees, stated that it had successfully led negotiations for the former staff in their pursuit of a fair settlement and repatriation expenses for foreign staff.
“They are very pleased to finally be able to get their due, put this behind them and look to the future,” Carla Olympio from Agency Seven Seven told the BBC. Agency Seven Seven said that the team invoked their rights under Ghana’s Labour Act of 2003, which mandates employers ‘’to file a notice with the Chief Labour Officer of Ghana and then engage in settlement negotiations with affected staff before implementing a redundancy exercise.’’
According to Ghanaian employment law, employees are entitled to redundancy payments and should receive a three-month notice before being laid off. – Business Insider Africa

Last year, X faced a lawsuit filed by former employees in a California court, accusing the company of allegedly failing to fulfil promised severance packages of at least US$500 million. Business Insider Africa
