TITLE-CHASING Highlanders basketball team let their chance slip after a 41-45 defeat to Giants in the Bulawayo Basketball Association Men’s League match played on Saturday.Highlanders are now leading with one point while Mavericks are second with a game in hand.
Mavericks would be guaranteed one hand closer to the title if they win their game in hand. BBA secretary-general Howard Phangwana said the defeat took Bosso by surprise as the league title is now wide open.
“Highlanders didn’t expect to lose. They blew their chance and it’s going to be difficult for them going forward. The title is now for Mavericks to lose. If they win the game in hand they will go to the top and closer to the title,” he said.
Phangwana said the level of competition has improved since the league is now on the final straight.
“The games are now very exciting, the level of competition is very high, Mavericks can also suffer a shocker, so they don’t have to relax but now they have an upper hand over Highlanders,” he said.
It was a sad weekend for Highlanders as their women’s team lost 33-70 to Lakers. Phangwana said the title chase in the women’s league is between Lakers and Mavericks.
The title will be decided when the two sides clash in a replay match, after their last encounter was called off due to bad light.
He said they are making plans to introduce mid-week games so as to clear the backlog.
