THE upcoming 28th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation is set to have more deliberations to reinforce the region’s collective commitment to democracy, good governance and stability, for smooth integration.

The meeting, to be held from July 16 to 17 in Salima, Malawi, will be chaired by that country’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Dr George Thapatula Chaponda.

In a statement, the regional body said the meeting also seeks to evaluate the current political situation in the region and advance efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and good governance.

“The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation recognises that peace, security and political relations are critical factors in creating a conducive environment for regional cooperation and integration,” SADC said in a statement.

The current members of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, also known as the Organ Troika, are Malawi, Eswatini, and Tanzania. The rotational body is responsible for promoting peace, security, and political stability across the region.

In accordance with Article 5 of the SADC Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, the Ministerial Committee of the Organ brings together Ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs, Defence, Public Security, and State Security from all SADC Member States.
