THE biennial hosting of the Africa Union Sports Council Region 5 Games in the Sadc region has improved infrastructure development in the ever-growing sporting industry.
Every even year, a country in the region plays host to the Games. Different sporting disciplines are exhibited and the best Under-20 talent takes part. Millions are invested in sporting infrastructure leaving a lasting legacy. Already existing facilities also get a facelift with modern features added.
Bulawayo, the hosts of the 2014 Championships saw some touches at Barbourfields Stadium, White City and City Pool.
Perhaps the biggest winner is athletics where most national events are now being hosted. Some of the key facilities that have benefited from the hosting of the Games are:
1. Zambia OYDC Swimming Pool,
2. NASDEC Netball and Tennis Courts and upgrade of roads (Zambia),
3. Bulawayo Swimming Pool heating and Athletics tartan track (Zimbabwe), White City Stadium and Barbourfields Stadium
4. Botswana Swimming Pool upgrade,
5. Lesotho Rapokolana Swimming Complex and National Stadium upgrade including new athletics track and hotel refurbishments,
6. Malawi Aquatic Complex, Griffin Saenda Indoor Complex, Civo Basketball Centre and upgrade of several Football pitches
