THE World Council of Civil Engineers (WCCE) president Mr Thomas Sanjo is expected to officially open a Southern African Development Community (Sadc)forum of engineers to run alongside the United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly.
said at the forum they would discuss matters to support the growth and development of the tourism sector.
“As members of the engineering profession, ECZ and our co-hosting engineering partners from Zambia, we have been allocated a slot to host a breakfast meeting on the 25th of August where the WCCE president Thomas Sanjo from Spain will be the guest of honour,” he said.
Engineering bodies from South Africa, Zambia and Namibia were among those that will send representatives to take part at the business meeting.
“There is now a realisation particularly in Zimbabwe that engineering plays a very central role in tourism. The facilities that tourists use are a result of work done by engineers, thus tourism and engineering are inseparable.
“During the forum, we will be discussing a number of issues including the development of the recently mooted idea to build a city outside Victoria Falls for the enjoyment of tourists when in Victoria Falls.
“The city will have infrastructure critical in providing enjoyment to tourists when in Victoria Falls,” he said.
Eng Rafemoyo said during their breakfast meeting they would get reports from sister organisations in Sadc on developments being made within the engineering fraternity in their respective countries.
At least 100 delegates were expected at the event. As a result of the critical importance Zimbabwe has placed on the engineering field to the tourism industry, the Government has also appointed five engineers including Eng Rafemoyo as the UNWTO general assembly brand ambassadors.
The other four are ECZ chairman Eng Martin Manhuwa, Zimbabwe Institute of Engineering (ZIE) president Dr Michael Tumbare, ZIE chief executive officer Dr Sansan Diarra and the outgoing ZIE president Eng Albert Muyambo.
