THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat yesterday handed over the Hashim Mbita Publication to the Museum of African Liberation in Harare.
The Commandant of the SADC Regional Peace Training Centre (RPTC), Namibian Rear Admiral Gottlieb Pandeni, handed over the publication (known as the Southern African Liberation Struggles) on behalf of SADC in fulfilment of the call made at the 44th SADC Summit of the Heads of State and Government held in Harare recently to provide liberation materials and artefacts for the Museum of African Liberation.
The publication was published in English, French and Portuguese with the Kiswahili version in progress, said the SADC secretariat in a statement.
Rear Admiral Pandeni highlighted the importance of showcasing and preserving the African liberation history, particularly on the southern African liberation struggles, which are comprehensively recorded in the nine volumes of the publication.
“It is a helpful publication designed to assist the present and future generations to remember the sacrifices made by millions of their forefathers and mothers in the liberation struggle,” the SADC Secretariat said.
Public relations manager for the Museum of Liberation, Mr Joseph Nkani, expressed gratitude to the SADC secretariat for handing over the publication, saying it would add to the growing collection for the museum.
“The publication is a culmination of the extensive Hashim Mbita Research Project which was initiated in August 2005 following the approval by the SADC summit held in Port Louis, Mauritius in 2005.
“The late Brigadier-General Hashim Mbita of the United Republic of Tanzania was the patron of the project,” said the SADC Secretariat. — New Ziana.
