THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretariat has issued a stern warning against the unauthorised use of its name, acronym and official logo, stressing that they are legally protected trademarks.
In a statement, the regional bloc said the name “Southern African Development Community”, the acronym “SADC”, as well as the organisation’s logo, are registered intellectual property belonging exclusively to the secretariat.
“SADC wishes to inform members of the public, institutions and organisations that its name, acronym and logo are registered and legally protected trademarks of the organisation,” said the secretariat.
The warning comes amid growing concern over the proliferation of entities and initiatives using the SADC name or identity without authorisation, potentially misleading the public and creating the impression of official affiliation.
The secretariat said that any unauthorised use of these trademarks constitutes an infringement of its intellectual property rights and may attract legal consequences, warning that appropriate action will be taken against individuals or organisations found to be in violation.
“The unauthorised use of these trademarks constitutes an infringement of SADC’s intellectual property rights and may result in appropriate legal action,” the statement read.
SADC said merely operating within the Southern African region does not entitle any organisation to adopt its name or branding.
“The fact that an entity operates within the Southern African region does not confer any right to use the name ‘SADC’ or to utilise the SADC brand, identity or associated trademarks in any form,” said the secretariat.
The regional body urged strict compliance, noting that its identity is reserved for official programmes, activities and events sanctioned by the secretariat.
Members of the public, private institutions and civic organisations have been strongly advised to refrain from using the protected marks without prior approval, in order to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the regional organisation.
SADC is a regional economic community comprising 16 member states, established to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth, regional integration and improved standards of living for the peoples of Southern Africa.
